Water is a valuable resource, and maintaining its purity is critical for the health and well-being of people worldwide. At CMI Oman, we are proud to contribute to water treatment solutions that enhance water quality, making it safe for consumption and use in various industries
Lime is the most frequently utilised chemical for treating potable and industrial water in annual tonnage. Many communities utilise it to improve water quality, particularly water softening. Indeed, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) has published regulations that permit the use of lime in drinking water treatment.
Practical Applications of Lime
Water Softening – The role of lime in water softening is to remove “carbonate” hardness (produced by bicarbonates and carbonates of calcium and magnesium) from the water, which is usually reduced by treatment with hydrated lime. Hardness induced by other calcium and magnesium salts, known as “noncarbonate” hardness, is typically addressed using the lime-soda procedure, which involves the precipitation of magnesium with lime. The co-produced calcium salt combines with the soda ash to produce a calcium carbonate precipitate.
Impurity Removal – Dolomitic lime is one of the most frequent procedures used to remove silica from water. The magnesium component of this lime is the active component for silica elimination. Lime is used to eliminate manganese, fluoride, and iron from water.
pH Adjustment/Coagulation – Hydrated lime is commonly used to alter the pH of water in preparation for further treatment. Lime is also used to combat “red water” by neutralizing acidic water, and reducing corrosion in pipes and mains. The corrosive waters contain an excessive amount of CO2. Lime precipitates CO2, forming calcium carbonate, which acts as a protective coating on the inside of water mains.
